Bouquet in hand, he receives her in the morning. Panda plushie in hand, she relishes how far they’ve come — this panda was his first gift to her when they were 14.

Prepare the tea. A cherished tea set is used, passed from mother to daughter to granddaughter. Drink the tea, grandma is still here.

The wedding lunch is no big affair.
78 guests, all their closest families and friends. Flowers! Flowers everywhere!

He offers his arm, she slips hers in. Together, they march in.
A moment like this, some people wait a lifetime.

Peranakan is the cuisine of the day. Gula melaka prawns, babi buah keluak, chap chye, and the list goes on. It was only fitting that the wedding cake was some variety of kueh. The couple found a lovely home baker across the causeway who customised this 3-tier kueh lapis. An arduous journey transporting this hefty 12kg cake back. Delicious, and now also memorable. (Spot the RV70 figurines!)

It ends with the customary yum seng toast, with wishes (pleas) for the couple to perform the true public service of boosting the nation’s birth rate.

7 hours later: She is deflated, eating cake for supper. He, on the other hand, begins to feel the weight of all the “好好照顾她“ (“take good care of her”) he received in the day. So while she eats, he wipes her gown clean…
